By Frank Patterson

It is not only teenagers that suffer from pimples. They are a dread for younger woman and men and even older people experiencing constant skin irritations. The very idea of appearing in public sporting a face full of pimples is unthinkable for many people. They will do almost anything to hide these aberrations and they will spend large amounts to get rid of them. In the end however, when it comes to acne treatment Boston citizens are best off consulting a qualified dermatologist.

Many people spend large amounts in an effort from preventing pimples from developing. Unfortunately many preventive measures are based on incorrect assumptions on what it is that causes pimples. They are not caused by sugar, chocolates or, in fact, any type of food. They are not caused by stress and they are not caused by sweat either. The main cause for pimples developing is blocked follicles.

Apart from genetic factors, pimples are caused by a number of things. The main culprit is cosmetics that are worn for long periods without thoroughly cleaning the face. Oil based cosmetics, especially, can easily cause blocked follicles. Many strong chemicals and detergents can also cause the follicles to become clogged up, causing inflammation and eventually, pimples.

There is certainly no shortage of remedies. Unfortunately, most of the numerous preparations that are available over the counter will make no difference whatsoever. The best route is to consult with a dermatologist. He will carefully evaluate the situation and recommend the best possible course of action. Retinoids are routinely prescribed because they are great in helping to prevent the clogging of the follicles. Oral contraceptives and antibiotics are also often highly effective.

More invasive methods of dealing with pimples are becoming more and more popular. Patients want instant results. Light treatment, especially with the use of blue light, is fast becoming all the rave and seems to be very effective. Patients may even opt for the physical removal of white and black heads by a dermatologist but this is risky because it can easily leave scars.

Pimples routinely clear up all by itself after a while and do not result in long term side effects. In some cases, however, sufferers may be left with severe scarring, especially if they tried home remedies and if they pinched, forced and scratched the affected areas. In such cases a chemical peel may help. Laser treatment is also very popular and it is common to use tissue fillers to simply hide the scars.

There is no guaranteed way in which to prevent pimples but there are a number of sensible steps to take. The face should be kept clean at all times and it is recommended to use a mild soap to wash the face several times a day. It may also help to regularly apply an exfoliolating mask. Using water based cosmetics is far safer than using oil based preparations.

Regardless of the amount of money spent or the care that is taken in personal hygiene, pimples will strike every now and then. The best route is to leave the pimples unmolested, to keep cleaning the face thoroughly and to see a dermatologist if the problem becomes severe. Pimples are not contagious and they are not a health hazard.
